New Pokemon Diamond/Pearl Screenshots: Pokemon Transfers!

-08/30/06-

New screenshots of Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl have surfaced in a Japanese gaming magazine (based on the images, it's apparently from Coro Coro). Some information about the trading system was revealed. Pokemon transfers to the Diamond/Pearl games will be limited to 6 Pokemon per day. A new status screen will display the date you obtained the Pokemon on your game. It seems that Pokemon you transfer to Diamond/Pearl needs to be re-captured using Park Balls at a park in the game. This should not be confused with the Safari Zone, which hasn't been confirmed with this latest news (the screenshots shows a Park Ball being used, not a Safari Ball).

UK Pokemon TCG Game Champ Makes History!

-08/30/06-

The Islington Gazette, a newspaper in the United Kingdom, featured an article on Fares Seekoum, who finished in fourth place in the 10 and under age category in the 2006 Pokemon TCG World Championships.

Game Champ Makes History - From the Islingon Gazette

Pokemon champ Fares Sekkoum is beaming with pride after making Trading Card Game history as the first ever UK player to make it to a world championship.

Pokemon is a popular Japanese cartoon and the trading cards, featuring characters from the programme, are a playground craze. The game requires logical thinking and winning strategies.

Fares, 10, from Ashbrook Road, Archway, went through months of qualifying rounds at city and regional championships before a tense day at the UK National Finals in June when he took the title of Pokemon Trading Card Game Under-10s National Champion.

He won an all-expenses paid trip to the World Championship held in Anaheim, California.

Competing against more than 400 other hopefuls from 30 countries around the globe, Fares beat a Canadian player in the last eight, only to be knocked out of the title race by Spencer Duncan from the USA.

Fares, who started playing Pokemon Trading Card games when he was seven, said: "It was really cool and I can't wait to go again next year. I was really nervous at the start but when I heard I'd made it into the top 35 I was really glad.

"It was very hard, compared to the UK national and city championships."

Fares' brothers Yacine, 15, and Sami, 16, also qualified for the World Championships, with Yacine finishing 15th in the world.

Fares' mother Fatima Sekkoum said: "He was very nervous in the beginning but he got more confidence as the days passed because he was doing very well."

Fares has won a free trip to next year's World Championships in Hawaii as well as dozens of other Pokemon goodies.

6 Years of Pokemon Elite 2000!

-08/28/06-

Pokemon Elite 2000 turns 6 years old today! It was back on August 28, 2000, when Pokemon Elite 2000 was first created. We also share our birthday with Pokemon creator, Satoshi Tajiri! He turned 41 today.

I'm glad to report that after 6 years, traffic to the site is at an all-time high! We're not done with the month of August yet, but this August has already set a new record for the busiest month for the website ever. Compared to last summer, this summer's traffic has increased by 80% (almost doubled compared to last year's summer). We're also breaking new records on our forum, where activity is also booming (compared to last summer, post activity on the forum has increased by over 130%, that's well over doubled compared to last summer).

I just want to say thanks to all the visitors of Pokemon Elite 2000! Your support throughout the years made this website a huge success!

Nintendo officially announced two new colors for the Nintendo DS Lite: Onyx and Coral Pink. The two new colors will be available on September 13, 2006. If you haven't got a DS yet, this is definitely a good time to get one. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon will be available on the DS on September 18, 2006 (there will also a GBA version, but obviously the DS featuring the two screens is the better option). After that is Pokemon Ranger on the DS, which will be released on October 30, 2006. And of course, the most anticipated Pokemon DS game of all, Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl for the DS will be released in Spring 2007.

Pokemon TCG: New Changes for the 2006-2007 Tournament Season!

-08/24/06-

From Pokemon TCG Organized Play (Summarized Version):

Pokemon Organized Play strives to improve its programs while continuing to provide a fun, competitive tournament experience for players of the Pokemon Trading Card game. The following changes to the POP structure will take effect at the beginning of the 2006- 2007 tournament season, which begins September 1st, 2006.

Age Group Changes:

For the 2006-2007 tournament season, a player’s age category will be determined at the beginning of the season, based on their date of birth, and will not change over the course of the tournament season. The new age divisions will be defined as follows:

Junior Division: Born in 1996 or later

Senior Division: Born in 1992, 1993, 1994 or 1995

Masters Division: Born in 1991 or earlier

Battle Road:

Due to the change in the invite structure for the 2007 World Championships, the Gym Challenge series becomes unnecessary. Pokemon Organized Play will replace this series with a new event series. The Battle Road series will be similar in scope to City Championships in regards to the number of events, with a slightly smaller prize pool.

Premier Rating:

Pokemon Organized Play will only support one rating for the 2006-2007 tournament season. This rating will consist of any event that Pokemon Organized Play designates as a Premier Event. These events will include City, State, Regional, and National Championships, as well as the new Battle Road series. Additionally, markets which do not run all of the events listed above will be given consideration on a case-by-case basis to run additional events which can be flagged as Premier Events. Prereleases, while no longer considered Premier Events, will continue to be operated by Premier Tournament Organizers.

Each series will have a K-Value based on the size and importance of the series. The higher the K-Value, the more rating points there are to win, or lose. Having a higher rating will play an important role in who receives an invite to the 2007 World Championships. Non-Premier tournaments will still be sanctioned, and we will continue to support these tournaments with free prize support as we have in the past, though players will not receive rating points for playing in these events.

World Championships:

In an effort to give more of our players the “big show” experience, Pokemon Organized Play will be putting more emphasis on making each country’s National Championships a more premium event. The 2007 World Championships, held at the Hilton Waikoloa Village in Kona, Hawaii, will be a smaller, more exclusive event than it has been in previous years, with approximately 64 players participating in each age group. The invite structure for the World Championship will be modified to accommodate this goal. There will be no Last Chance Qualifier for the 2007 World Championships.

Inside the Pokemon Costume!

-08/21/06-

The Pokemon character costumes are a common sight at Pokemon events, but have you ever wondered what's it like to be a Pikachu? Or a Munchlax? Dionne Walker, an AP reporter, found out by taking a job as a Pokemon character:

Playing a cartoon character - by Dionne Walker

I scoured Craigslist and found an ad: Workers needed for all-day kids event in Montgomery County, Maryland. I sent an e-mail and the next day, a woman called. Did I have tattoos? Did I have experience with kids? Finally she asked my height -- 5-foot-nothing. Then, gingerly: ''How do you feel about being in costume?'' She explained that there would be two characters who would have to take pictures with kids. The characters earned $18 an hour. I was all over it.

They e-mailed paperwork before my Friday night training and offered several tips -- ''Bring towels. Drink water. Wear shorts.'' Whoa. What had I gotten myself into?

I missed much of Friday night's training and when I returned Saturday morning, had no idea what to expect. I was guided to one of those mall back areas where I met with three other girls and two tall guys in Pokemon jackets; I later learned the guys were our ''handlers.''

We were instructed to assemble the costumes. I expected something close to those old '80s style Halloween numbers, a one-size-fits-all plastic body suit and a mask. I figured I'd spend the whole day doing the moonwalk in a Pikachu helmet and get $180 for my time. What emerged from four gigantic cloth bags instead was $10,000 worth of fiberglass, fur, rope and foam.

UDPATE: GTS, Battle Tower, Super Contests, Underground Shinou!

-08/11/06-

Yahoo Japan's Pokemon page was updated today with the information revealed the latest issue of Coro Coro. However, the site revealed a few more details and showed new and clearer screenshots.

Global Trade System

The GTS (Global Trade Station) allows players to trade with anyone in the entire world. A nice feature with the GTS is that you'll be able to deposit all the Pokemon you want to trade, and set which Pokemon at what level and gender you'll accept the trade with. If the system finds someone in the world that matches your offer, then the trade is completed.

Battle Tower

The Battle Tower makes a return in Pokemon Diamond/Pearl. Located inside the Battle Tower is the Wi-Fi Battle Room. You will be challenged by seven opponents from the internet.

Pokemon Super Contests

The Pokemon Contests feature, which many of you are probably familiar in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, is back and is called the Pokemon Super Contest. The Pokemon Super Contests allows up to four people to participate and will have three stages. The first stage, Visual Judging, will allow you to use the stylus on the touch screen to dress up your Pokemon with various items. The second stage, Dance Judging, will put your Pokemon into a dance routine where you will be judged on coordination and rhythm. And the third stage, Performance Judging, you use your Pokemon's moves to impress the judges.

Instead of Pokeblocks, you will now use Pofins. You will still use berries to make Pofins, and you can make them at the Pofin Bakery.

Underground World of Shinou

The underground world of Shinou will feature a capture the flag game. Each player will have a flag in their secret base, and they must capture the opponent's flag and return it to their base to win. Players can set traps that will delay their opponent from reaching their flag. Another game in the underground world of Shinou is the feature to search for treasures in the underground.

Sneak Peek Recap: Party of the Decade!

-08/10/06-

Hello everyone, just got back from Party of the Decade! I was there for three days, the day before the event, the day of the Party of the Decade, and the day after the event. Each day was packed with Pokemon! As you know from the previous news, Nintendo sent me there all the way from California to New York to cover this special event.

It's going to take me a while to post everything I experienced, so here's a small sneak peek of what to expect. Here's six pictures I took during my stay there. I will be updating more today, so stay tuned for more stuff!

Sneak Peek

Picture 1: Can't get good coverage without the proper tools. Fortunately, Nintendo was able to provide me a press badge and a VIP badge so I can get a close look at the event and provide everyone out there an in depth look at the event (especially for those that weren't able to attend). Picture 2: The front entrance to Bryant Park, where Party of the Decade is located. The podium there provided information about the event, such as maps and leaflets.

Picture 1: I got there really early, but people were already lining up for the events. This one pictured here allowed people to try out Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Picture 2: While I was walking around looking at the various activities, I came across the trainers from Pokemon Ranger and Pokemon Emerald. So here you see the male and female trainers for Pokemon Ranger, and the female trainer for Pokemon Emerald. The male trainer for Pokemon Emerald wandered off too far ahead, so couldn't get him into the group picture.

Picture 1: A long line right? What for? These people are in line to download a Pokemon of their choice to their games out of the twenty available Pokemon (these are the top twenty top Pokemon as voted by fans at the official site). The line got even longer later in the day. Picture 2: I kept walking through the same paths, but every time I pass by, it seemed that I discovered something new every time. These Pokemon statues were placed throughout the park. Some of them are really cleverly placed, so I had to keep my eyes open, at any corner I could discover another Pokemon.

Again, this is just a small sample of what to expect. I will have complete coverage of what I experienced at Party of the Decade later today. All the details on what I did at the event, information I learned from the Nintendo and Pokemon USA staff, and more! So stay tuned!

Pokemon.com Interview with Hulk Hogan

Q: Hulk, we're really excited to have you join us at the Party of the Decade as we celebrate 10 years of Pokemon live at Bryant Park! How are you preparing for the big day?

A: Practicing my Pokemon skills, of course! I'm really excited to be a part of this huge event. 10 years of Pokemon is something to be really proud of! And it keeps expanding, and getting bigger and better!

Q: With your storied career you obviously know what it takes to be a Champion. What advice do you have for our Pokemon Video Game National Championship finalists?

A: Have fun, dudes! I've always had fun with all the different challenges in my life; whether it's in the ring, raising a family, or on the big screen. You have to believe in yourself, work hard, and strive to be the best in what you do.

Q: How did you first hear about Pokemon? Through your kids? Please tell us.

A: My son Nick is a huge Poke-maniac! He's got tons of Pokemon trading cards, and he's played the video games too! I don't know if he's quite ready to take on the National Finalists, but knowing his competitive spirit, he would certainly go out there and want to win! And my wife Linda and daughter Brooke knows a thing or two about Pokemon as well.

Q: We can tell how important family and fun are to you. We've gotten to know your daughter (Brooke) and son (Nick) from Hogan Knows Best. What values do you encourage in your kids that you would recommend to Pokemon fans?

A: I encourage kids to believe in themselves. Everyone has it in them to be a leader when they need to step up and tackle a challenge. But you've got to be a team player as well, everyone can use a little help from their friends. Always have respect for your parents and teachers, because they're cool, and want you to succeed in every way.

Q: An upcoming tagline for the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games (the upcoming Pokemon video games) asks: What would you do if you woke up one day and you were a Pokemon? Hulk, whatcha gonna do?

A: I'd be ready for all challenges, I 'd carry a Rescue Team on my back, swimming through the waters, running hard and fast through the lands. And I'd have to bring all my Pokemon friends together and tell them - Watcha gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild on you!

Q: Why are you so popular with both kids and parents?

A: When "Hulkamania" first started all the little Hulkamaniacs believed in me, and more importantly, in themselves. They would be the ones telling their moms and dads to take their vitamins, and to believe in themselves. Now as they grow up, they pass on these values to today's kids.

Q: What's your favorite Pokemon character and why?

A: Well I've got a few...you've got to go with Pikachu because it's got my signature colors (yellow and red). But you've gotta respect Machamp, dude, with its huge pythons [muscles]. And let's not forget the legendary Pokemon either!
