Pokemon TCG: Premier Ratings and Rankings Changes! -01/24/07- |
Pokemon Organized Play have announced new changes to the Pokemon TCG's Premiere Ratings and Rankings, you can view them below: POP Premier Rating Invitational Tiebreakers After the final Premier Event in a Rating Zone has been uploaded, Pokemon Organized Play will verify the validity of the ratings and will then award invitations to the 2007 Pokemon TCG World Championships to the top-ranked player or players in that Zone. In the event that two or more players are tied for a rating-based invite, Pokemon Organized Play will determine who receives the invite based on a series of tiebreakers. These tiebreakers will only be applied after the final Premier Event in a Rating Zone has been uploaded and after the validity of the ratings has been verified. The tiebreakers will be applied in the following order: - Premier Event Match Win Percentage - Total Matches Played - Average Size of Premier Events Attended - Average Record at Common Tournaments - Coin Flip Cross-Age-Group Match Ratings Changes After much research and discussion, the POP rules team has determined that it is in the best interest of the program for Cross-Age-Group Matches to no longer be rated. Our findings show that a significant portion of players who play a match against an opponent in an age group above their own will lose that match. This means that even a highly rated Junior player is at a severe ratings risk and disadvantage when playing against a Senior player. We believe that this change is imperative to the integrity of the Premier Ratings System and is a fair and balanced decision for those players affected. Therefore, this will be implemented retroactively to the beginning of the City Championships series. Players can expect to see changes in their ratings shortly after this change is implemented. Ratings and Rankings Display Update With the introduction of Premier Rating Invites, it has become more important for players to know more accurately where they stand in the rankings as the season progresses. Because Pokemon Organized Play allows players to opt in and out of ratings and rankings at their discretion, POP believes it is important that players who remain opted in throughout the season know where they actually stand against players who may not opt in until the last moment. Therefore, effective immediately, all players will appear in the rankings list. However, those players who have not opted in will be displayed as “Not Opted In.” This will allow players to see that there are other players potentially ranked higher who could opt in and earn an invite, pushing some players out of the top rankings by earning those invites. POP will not announce the date of the final Rankings pull until it has been completed. It will, however, take place be on a date after the final Premier event in a given Ratings Zone. Players not opted in to the Rankings prior to this pull will not be eligible for a 2007 World Championships invite and Travel Award. Decimal Rating Display Effective immediately, POP will be displaying player ratings down to two decimal points. This will allow POP to better separate the rankings, avoiding some tiebreakers later on. We hope this change will help our players better track their own ratings and those of others rated close to them as they strive to earn an invitation to the World Championships in 2007. ----- For more information on Premiere Ratings, go here: Premiere Ratings and You | [Questions and Comments on This News Story]

"Anyone who's serious about playing should come up and try it." Competitors will include a 10-year-old St. Louis boy who became national champion last year. He won a $5,000 scholarship, plasma TV set, custom game system and free trip for him and his parents to Anaheim, Calif., where the world championship was held. |

Creatures and Friends Come Together Over Game of Cards - The Journal Times In Pokemon, whether you win depends on what you do, what your opponent does, and the luck of the draw. It is complex, said Troy Lesky, 36, who came from La Crosse for the tournament with his son, Mike. He started playing after his children became interested in the game. He would give them cards as rewards for completing household chores. "About three years ago we started attending a league in La Crosse. It’s pretty much no looking back once you get into it. You’re pretty much hooked." "We travel all over the Midwest. We go to nationals every year in Columbus, Ohio." And there’s money. The reward for winning at the worlds is a $7,500 scholarship and a trip to next year’s worlds. This year they’ll be in Hawaii, which is why Lesky and his son came to Racine. One of the ways to qualify is to accumulate points. |

The Independent: Top 20 Video Game Franchises (same list from Wikipedia)!
-01/11/07- |
The Independent published a story, which included a list of the "The
bestselling games franchises." Here's the list:
- The Bestselling Game Franchises - 1. Mario: 193
million 2. Pokemon: 155 million 3.
Final Fantasy: 68 million 4. Madden NFL: 56 million
5. The Sims: 54 million 6. Grand Theft Auto: 50 million
7. Donkey Kong: 48 million 8. The Legend of Zelda: 47
million 9. Sonic the Hedgehog: 44 million
10. Gran Turismo: 44 million 11. Lineage: 43 million
12. Dragon Quest: 41 million 13. Crash Bandicoot: 34
million 14. Resident Evil: 31 million 15.
James Bond: 30 million 16. Tomb Raider: 30 million
17. Mega Man: 26 million 18. Command & Conquer: 25
million 19. Street Fighter: 25 million 20.
Mortal Kombat: 20 million Mario and
Pokemon are the only franchises to break the 100 million mark. No
surprise here, despite Mario's head start, Pokemon is catching up
quickly. The Independent
Naturally, a lot of media has picked up the story and credited back to
The Independent. You can view the list here:
The Independent: The bestselling games franchises. However, this
same exact list was available elsewhere a week earlier, on Wikipedia.
Wikipedia When I looked at the numbers, they looked
very familiar from what I saw last month on Wikipedia, in particular the
numbers for Mario and Pokemon that I remembered somewhat (I was
researching statistics of best selling games). So I went back to the
Wikipedia article that lists the top video game franchises, and found
that the numbers from The Independent are identical to the numbers
listed in the Wikipedia article. Most of the updated numbers on
Wikipedia were available since November 2006 and December 2006 (so not
exactly new news, per se). History logs show that Wikipedia had the same
exact numbers a week earlier since January 2, 2007 (when new sale
numbers of Madden NFL 07 were added). Most of the numbers data, as
credited in the Wikipedia article, are from press releases, but some are
tucked away in articles concerning a single game. You can view the
Wikipedia list here:
Wikipedia: Best-selling video game franchises
Wikipedia User Discussion Some users on Wikipedia
have also took notice. Here's the article's discussion page concerning
The Independent article: - Who
is the first to notice something strange about this top 20 published,
apparently, by The Independant? ;-) -- ReyBrujo 12:30, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

basically they plagiarized the list from our article and didn't bother
crediting us. Dionyseus 18:04, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
- Now Joystiq has posted "London's Independent's list". I posted a
comment, I hope Joystiq notices that the list was taken from Wikipedia.

Nintendo.com's website, it will probably be redirected to the Manaphy
page soon). The page revealed the movie synopsis for Pokemon Ranger and
the Temple of the Sea:

Official Movie Synopsis It all started
with a legend passed down from the people of Water...
Somewhere in this world, there is a Sea Temple created by the people of
the Water. The Sea Temple contains a hidden treasure called the Sea
Crown, but no one has ever seen the Sea Crown, or even the Sea Temple,
because the temple is protected by a secret mechanism. The temple drifts
through a vast ocean undetected, waiting... waiting...
Ash and Pikachu meet Lizabeth, a descendant of the people of the Water,
and learn about the legend. They also meet Jackie, a Pokemon Ranger on a

as The Prince of the Sea) and find the Sea Temple as well. While on this
important mission, Jackie is attacked by a pirate known as The Phantom.
The Phantom plans to obtain the Sea Crown and take over the world - but
first he needs the Manaphy egg. Now Lizabeth and Ash must help Jackie
protect the egg and stop the nefarious pirate! What is the Sea Crown?
How does Manaphy's mysterious power conntect it to the Sea Temple? Can
Ash help Jackie complete his mission?

Pokemon.com Comments on PokePark: Merely a Possibility!
-01/09/07- |
To kick of the new year, PE2K presented an article that details some of
the major release dates and events for Pokemon in 2007. Among them, a
small note concerning the PokePark. PokePark is a temporary theme park
that debuted in Japan in 2005. In 2006, the theme park moved to Taiwan.
It was announced that the PokePark will run for five years through 2010.
After the Taiwan visit, the PokePark will visit another location. And
there's the big question, where will PokePark be in 2007? The US is one
possibility, but of course, just a possibility, nothing confirmed,
nothing official, nada. Pokemon.com
commented on the PokePark in a recent Mailbag saying that it's merely a
possibility: Question: I
read a web article earlier this year, advising that the Pokemon Park
would be traveling to Europe and US later in the year - I haven't seen
any updates on Pokemon.com. Is this going to occur in 2007?
Pokemon.com: Be careful what you read on the internet - while
there's always a possibility that POKEPARK could travel to another
country, what you've heard was merely that: a possibility! If it's
officially decided that POKEPARK will be coming to the United States,
then we'll have the news. The
person who asked that question probably got it confused when reports
suggests that the US, Europe, and Shanghai (China)
are among locations being considered after the Taiwan visit. As always,
we'll have updates here in the news if there are any new updates on the
PokePark, wherever it ends up. | [Questions
