PE2K Podcast Episode Weedle!

After a nightmare of an editing process (don’t ask), the podcast is finished and ready for your listening ears. The live streamers got a few treats that had to be edited out, so I apologize for the lack of length for the non-live streamers. Perhaps that’s just more incentive to be here when we’re recording, eh? ReclusiveDemon joined us this week, along with Dan, Zach, Mitch, Eric, and myself for one of my favorite shows yet. Hope you all enjoy it as much as we did!.

Tsunekazu Ishihara

1UP posted an interview with the CEO of The Pokemon Company, Tsunekazu Ishihara. He talked about the need to come out with new features every time and also appealing to the old fans:

CEO of The Pokemon Company and producer on every Pokemon title since the original Red/Blue, the man is at the head of a worldwide game and licensing empire that’s produced billions in revenue — and his outfit’s latest release, Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver, is hitting Japan on September 12.

There was, to say the least, a lot of pressure behind this project, a pair of remakes for the Game Boy Color’s Pokemon Gold/Silver. “Gold/Silver was released when Pokemon was a watchword across the entire world, when everybody was expecting everything from it,” Ishihara told Famitsu magazine this week. “We wanted to outclass it, and that gave us quite a lot of pressure. We have to make people say that this is new, that it’s awesome, or else there’s no point. That’s why HG/SS has new features in every field. It’s packed with new stuff, and I think both the developers and the players are going to be satisfied.”

One of those new features is the PokeWalker, a free pack-in pedometer that communicates via infrared with the game and lets you unlock new items and creatures. “A wireless adapter was included with FireRed and LeafGreen, an attempt to advance the system’s multiplayer functionality,” Ishihara notes. “[Nintendo president Satoru] Iwata wanted us to implement something fresh for people playing through Red/Green for the second time, so that was the result after a trial-and-error process.

“This time, of course, he advised us that we had better make something that outclassed the wireless adapter,” he added with a laugh. “Of course, I love devices like these too — Iwata pushes us like this with every project; it’s part of the process that led to development.”

Kids may still be the primary target for Pokemon titles, but the adult audience is just as, if not more vital within Ishihara’s mind. “Appealing to old fans is an incredibly important theme for us,” he said. “People who played the games back then are now getting jobs at our company, and making games that keep them playing is totally key. We need them to feel that the DS games are better and packed with more stuff than ever before.”

If you ever been to a Pokemon tournament, you know very well that all walks of life play Pokemon. Kids, teens, adults, parents, grandparents, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and so on. You can also add America’s Next Top Model contestant Erin as a Pokemon fan as well:

“America’s Next Top Model” always likes to have at least one girl on the show that walks to the beat of her own drummer. This time, that girl just might be Erin.

The self-described “nerd” talks about playing Pokemon on the plane ride to start the competition and describes the audition process as “time-consuming.” She also uses dorky phrases like “All that jazz.”

“I’m here to play the game,” Erin says. “And I’m going to win the game because I’m good at games. Games are easy.”

Grace Beck

Grace Beck has been getting a lot of media coverage, and she’s not even the champion. But she did surprise the competition and herself by making it to the semifinals at the 2009 Pokemon Video Game World Championships.

G4TV did an interview with Grace Beck:

G4: Grace, you started playing Pokemon competitively at this year’s Pokemon National Championships. How did you end up there?
Grace Beck: My cousin is Chris Tsai, who was the highest-ranking American Pokemon player in the World Championships last year. He was also one of the national champions. He had no luck during this year’s regionals, so he went to the nationals in St. Louis to enter as a last-chance qualifier. He and his mom invited me, just to see everyone and hang out. They know I like Pokemon as well, so they thought it would be fun to spend time with everyone. I entered to play because I’m more of a Pokemon collector and the tournament organizers were giving out a rare Pokemon if you entered to play in the tournament. Not intending to play in the tournament thinking I’d never get through the random draw — there were hundreds of people there — I went to register just so I could get the giveaway Pokemon. [laughs]

G4: And you ended up placing third and qualifying for the National Championships!
Beck: [laughs] Yeah! My number was drawn and so was Chris’s, so I was in a panic because I didn’t know what to do. On the fly, Chris traded me a team. I asked for something a cat with a stylus could use. I asked for something easy. He had been preparing for the tournament for months and had a lot of teams available. He just gave me one on the fly. He traded it to me minutes before the first round began.

G4: I heard that you felt a little ashamed of winning the nationals.
Beck: I felt like…I didn’t deserve any of it. When compared to people like Chris and a lot of other friends he has, they’ve been preparing for months or years for this event — just testing out different strategies in the game — and here I am, a total newbie in terms of battling. I never battled an actual person before that day. I’m going in. It’s my first battle. I’m just goofing off and taking silly pictures. And at the end of the day I was 5-0, finishing at the top of my bracket.
