The others are all too friendly and nice to really be rivals. xD You don't feel compelled to do better and beat them because they're good guys anyway. With Gary (and Silver) you at least felt like you had something to prove. I picked Gary over Silver because I actually found Gary a challenge to beat in Red and Blue, while Silver was always easy with fairly underleveled Pokemon.
