[Click to Enlarge] "Pokemon Heroes” is just eligible for a nomination, now we have to wait and see if it actually does get a nomination for Best Animated Feature film. The category was created in back 2001, in which “Shrek” won. The following year, “Spirited Away” won the award. It was the first time an anime film was nominated for the award (there were no anime films nominated in 2001), and of course, the first anime film to win it. “Spirited Away” beat out two very successful box office films, “Ice Age” and “Lilo and Stitch.” The Eligible Entries Along with “Pokemon Heroes,” there are 10 other eligible films are: “Finding Nemo,” “Brother Bear,” “Jester Till (Till Eulenspiegel),” “The Jungle Book 2,” “Looney Tunes: Back in Action,” “Millennium Actress,” “Piglet's Big Movie,” “Rugrats Go Wild!” “Tokyo Godfathers,” “The Triplets of Belleville.” Who's Going to Get Nominated? “Finding Nemo” is pretty much a lock to be nominated, and an early favorite. “Millennium Actress,” an anime film, didn’t make as much money compared to the fish movie, but has received a lot of good ratings from film critics, similar to 2002 winner, “Spirited Away” which also had great critic reviews, but didn’t make big bucks. Both were a limited release, which explains the lack of box office success. Might we see another anime film win at the Oscar again? Under Oscar rules, if there’s under 16 eligible entries (which is true in this situation with 11), then there can only be 3 nominations. “Finding Nemo” is one spot. And I believe “Millennium Actress” will get a nomination. “The Triplets of Belleville,” which debuts November 26th, is not a typical animated film, but this bizarre French animated film has a good chance to get nominated. The film won the Special Jury Prize this year at the Copenhagen International Film Festival. Back to "Pokemon Heroes" As for “Pokemon Heroes,” it’s not surprising it didn’t get good ratings from the critics. It’s difficult to like a movie, when you’re supposed to watch the TV series as well. And I’m sure most movie critics don’t watch the TV series. However, many critics do say the latest Pokemon movie does show visual improvement. Oscar Dates Nominations for the Oscars will be announced on January 27, 2004. The Oscars will be presented on February 29, 2004. |
