Pokemon FireRed Reaches Top 10 Selling Video Games in 2004!

Another year, another top 10 for Pokemon.

Pokemon FireRed took sixth place for the best selling video game in the US for 2004. Considering the game was a remake just adds to the achievement. Although Pokemon LeafGreen barely missed the top 10 which finished at 11th (just a difference of about a thousand to get to 10th), the two games combined sales would have made the combo the fourth best selling games.

The full list - Best Selling Video Games in the US for 2004

1. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2) - 5.1 million units sold

2. Halo 2 (XBOX) - 4.2 million units sold

3. Madden NFL 2005 (PS2) - 3.2 million units sold

4. ESPN NFL 2K5 (PS2) - 1.5 million units sold

5. Need for Speed: Underground 2 (PS2) 1.4 million units sold

6. Pokemon FireRed (GBA) - 1.2 million units sold

7. NBA Live 2005 (PS2) - 1.2 million units sold

8. Spider-Man: The Movie 2(PS2) - 1.1 million units sold

9. Halo (XBOX) - 1.1 million units sold

10. ESPN NFL 2K5 (XBOX) - 1 million units sold

Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen (Combined) - 2.3 million units sold

Pokemon FireRed: 1.27 million

Pokemon LeafGreen: 1.09 million

ESPN NFL 2K5 (XBOX): 1.098 million, Pokemon LeafGreen: 1.097 million (about a one thousand difference)

Also, Pokemon Colosseum claimed the title of the best selling GameCube game in 2004. Without a doubt, Pokemon Colosseum helped the sales of the GameCube.

This has nothing to do with Pokemon, but it's interesting none the less.

Researchers found a new gene that may help the treatment of cancer. These researchers called this gene POKEMON, which stands for POK Erythroid Myeloid Ontogenic factor (the last N was just thrown in there I suppose, just to finish the word nicely, POKEMON sounds better than POKEMO or POKEMOF). Of course, as we all know here, we know Pokemon as the game/anime. Unless the researchers were hiding in a cave somewhere for the past decade, I'm guessing they knew about Pokemon.

Anyways, this POKEMON gene discovery sounds very promising, if the POKEMON gene is switched off, the "network of cancer-causing genes" are disrupted, therefore, shutting down this cancer producing system. In a test the researchers did, they injected a dysfunctional form of the gene into mice, and they all quickly developed a fatal form of lymphoma (a type of cancer). In another group of mice, the researchers "knock out" the POKEMON gene, and the mice failed to develop any type of cancer.

Of course, more work needs to be done on this, they still need to develop a medicine form. It's important to note that switching off genes like the POKEMON gene could come with risks, but researchers believe it's far less toxic than standard therapy.

Pokemon Named as 1UP.com's "Essential 50"!

Pokemon was named one of the "Essential 50" (the most important games ever made) by 1UP.com. Their article about Pokemon can be found here: Essential 50: Pokemon (The main page of the Essential 50: Essential 50: Main Page ).

This is, in my opinion, an obvious choice to choose Pokemon. Not only was it a huge craze years ago, it's still going well even to this day. Pokemon brought a lot of new ideas that was never seen before. It also opened the doors to other anime to enter the US (this was also mentioned in the article).

The article itself describes the beginnings and the success of Pokemon. Also, you'll find Pokemon Elite 2000 listed as a resource link in the article.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! Pokemon Elite 2000 will be entering it's 5th year (started back in 2000, hence the name). A big thanks for all the visitors to Pokemon Elite 2000, you have made this site a great success!
