Pokemon Diamond/Pearl: 1 Million Sold in Five Days!

-04/27/07-

Press Release (April 26, 2007)

Pokémon Hotter Than Ever

One of the video game industry's most celebrated franchises is officially hotter than ever. Within just five days of availability, more than 1 million copies of Pokémon® Diamond and Pokémon Pearl for the portable Nintendo DS™ have sold in the United States since Sunday's launch; a faster rate than any previous Pokémon games since the franchise's U.S. introduction, almost a decade ago. To date, more than 155 million copies of Pokémon games have sold worldwide.

Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl are poised to become two of the top-selling games of 2007 in the United States. More than one half million people pre-ordered the games before launch. Additionally, thousands of people attended the kickoff launch event in New York, and demand for the games continues to be off the charts. These latest versions of Pokémon games were introduced in Japan on Sept. 28, 2006, and have already been purchased by more than 5 million video gamers there.

The two games include a number of features that make them particularly attractive to gamers, including:

* More than 100 new Pokémon.

* A 3-D look that makes Pokémon jump off the screen.

* Worldwide wireless battling and trading using Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection.

* Voice chat functions that let players talk wirelessly with their friends.

Later this year, these two titles will also help expand the Pokémon universe for the first time to Wii™, Nintendo's new home video game system. Diamond and Pearl owners will be able to use their DS hardware units as controllers for Pokémon Battle Revolution (launching June 25), the first Pokémon game available for Wii. Players also will be able to export characters to the Wii game.

Nintendo Posts Record Year: Strong Nintendo DS and Wii Sales!

-04/27/07-

Press Release (April 26, 2007)

Nintendo Posts Record Year On Strong Nintendo DS Sales, Breakthrough Reception for Wii

Nintendo Co., Ltd., today reported final consolidated fiscal year revenues of 966.5 billion yen and operating profits of 226.0 billion yen for the year ending March 31, 2007, an increase of 90 percent and 150 percent, respectively, over the same period one year ago. Both numbers are record highs for the company.

The results are due largely to full-year sales of more than 23 million portable Nintendo DS™ systems globally, along with 123 million Nintendo DS games. Since introduction, the Nintendo DS has now eclipsed lifetime sales of 40 million systems.

In addition, in less than five months since introduction, the company sold 5.84 million of its new Wii™ home video game systems globally, virtually every one snapped up immediately by consumers, along with nearly 29 million Wii games. Wii has taken a step toward becoming a cultural phenomenon, appealing widely to both avid and previously disinterested game-playing audiences.

For the fiscal year beginning April 1, 2007, Nintendo projects sales of 14 million Wii systems and 55 million games worldwide. The company projects sales of 22 million Nintendo DS hardware unit sales and 130 million software units sales. Nintendo forecasts consolidated sales increasing nearly 18 percent to 1.14 trillion yen, and operating profits growing nearly 20 percent to 270 billion yen.

All financial projections are based on an anticipated ratio of 115 yen to the U.S. dollar, and 150 yen to the euro. Using this estimate, recurring and net profits for the year are projected to be flat in anticipation of a foreign currency reevaluation loss.

Here's the part on Pokemon Diamond/Pearl in Nintendo's 2007 Financial Statement:

From Nintendo's 2007 Financial Statement

With respect to sales by business category within the electronic entertainment products division, “ Nintendo DS” and “Nintendo DS Lite” sold a total of more than 23 million units worldwide during the fiscal year (40 million units life-todate), resulting from continuous robust sales of “ Nintendo DS Lite ” after its March launch in Japan and strong sales following its June release overseas. In addition, “Nintendo DS” software enjoyed a boost in sales. For instance, “New Super Mario Bros. ” , the side-scrolling action game with easy access and user-friendly operation, sold 9.5 million units on a worldwide basis, and “ Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!” , which was released overseas after achieving popularity in Japan, has cultivated a new video game market of brain training overseas. “Brain Age” has sold a total of 8.08 million units worldwide including its sequel version released in Japan (12 million units life-to-date). “ Nintendogs ” continued to enjoy favorable sales overseas, reaching a total of 6.95 million sales units (13.6 million units life-to-date). “Pokémon Diamond and Pearl”, the latest series of “Pokémon” launched last September in Japan, sold 5.21 million units and has yet to be released overseas. As a result, the number of new software titles and long-term selling titles has increased, generating a significant rise in handheld software sales in the fiscal year.

New Pokemon Arcade Game: Pokemon Battrio!

-04/11/07-

The Japanese toy manufacturer, Tomy, has a created a new Pokemon arcade game called "Pokemon Battrio".

Pokemon Battrio is similar to Pokemon Battle Revolution, but will feature cell shaded graphics and 3-on-3 battling by using poker chip like discs. The arcade game will use a sensor to pick up the data from the discs and show the Pokemon on the arcade's screen where players can battle it out. There will be 36 different Pokemon available when it will be launched, but more will be added on later on. Players can arrange the different Pokemon in different formations, which is an important aspect of the game play. Players can battle against another player, or can play a single player mode against a CPU opponent.

Pokemon Battrio will be available in Japan in July 2007, and will cost 100 Yen per play (which converted in US currency, is about 83 cents).

Pokemon TCG: Playing Just for Fun, and Learning, Too!

-04/09/07-

The Edmonton Journal has an interesting article about a reporter's experience playing the Pokemon TCG with her son:

The Edmonton Journal: Playing Just for Fun, and Learning, Too

It’s spring break, and I’m sitting on the kitchen floor surrounded by an astounding array of otherworldly creatures. My son is groaning, rolling his eyes, and muttering, “You just don’t get it.” I think he’s just about reached his breaking point with me. He valiantly attempts, once again, to explain the intricate rules of Pokemon to his aging, dim-witted crone of a mother.

I never win when we play Pokemon. I grew up playing card games. I should be good at this. I recall long winter afternoons of canasta, rummy, and crazy 8s played with my brother and dad.

...

As our kids grow, their games change, and we start to realize that the real fun often lies in releasing our stodgy, stuffy adult ideals of play. They’re thrilled when we get on their level, physically and mentally; play the games they enjoy or, even better, make up; and let them direct the play.

Which brings us back to Pokemon. I’d be misleading you if I claimed to love the bizarre multitude of creatures and attacks involved in that game, but here I am, launching a blistering volley of “tail whips” from my Wartortle, in a vain attempt to defend myself from his Geodude’s “stone barrage.”

Do I understand any of this?

Not really. But hey, my son is adding up our points at lightning speed (math skills), reading all kinds of complex words (language skills), trying very hard to help me (honesty, fairness, and kindness) get a toehold in the quagmire of rules — and I haven’t laughed this hard in a long time.

Let the games begin.

Executive Producer of Pokemon Speaks on Anime!

-04/05/07-

Masakazu Kubo, Executive Producer of the Pokemon TV Show and Movies.

The Chosun Ilbo, a Korean news outlet, has an article about the Tokyo International Anime Fair. One of the main focus of the article is on Masakazu Kubo, the executive producer of the Pokemon TV show and movies.

Chosun Ilbo: Anime Fans Convene in Tokyo to See What's Hot

Hours before the doors opened on Japan's largest exhibition devoted to anime, Masakazu Kubo was prowling through the Tokyo convention center.

Kubo is the executive producer at Tokyo Anime Center, and the top producer for the long-running "Pokemon" animated television and movie series. "Pokemon", which features a group of mythical creatures led by a fellow named Pikachu, is a favorite program for children and their parents all over the world - it is shown in at least 70 countries.

Kubo stalked around the booths at the exhibition to learn where anime - Japanese-style animated film - is headed, so he can try to continue "Pokemon's" 10-year reign at the top of the anime business.

The good news for the industry, Kubo says, is that anime films are attracting more U.S. fans.

Kubo says about 60 percent of anime films are based on Japanese comic books, known as manga.

In Asia, fans of manga, which tend to have complicated story lines aimed at adults, are able to make the shift to complex anime plots. Westerners, however, are less familiar with manga, and they are more used to the simpler story lines of Western animated films, so, Kubo says, they are less receptive to anime.

Kubo says that when an artist creates an animation based on manga, at times the complicated story line tends to creep in. He says people often assume anime is solely for kids and do not bother to look at it. But graphic novels are becoming prominent in countries such as the United States, he says, so people are becoming more receptive to complicated anime titles.

PE2K Polls: March Results!

-04/01/07-

The results for the March polls are in. We found that a majority of you have the Nintendo DS, and for those that don't, it looks like many of you are planning to get one. 57% of people that voted in poll said they will get Pokemon Diamond/Pearl on the first day, or pre-ordered it already.

Most people seem to prefer Diamond over Pearl (47% versus 23%), though many of you are planning to get both versions (30%). When we asked which starter people are planning to choose, Piplup came in first with 40%, Turtwig in second with 35%, and Chimchar in third with 25%.
